Walking in Mallorca
Mallorca (or Majorca to some) has a tranquil, timeless landscape. Rising abruptly from the interior are the craggy Tramuntana Mountains, over which birds of prey soar on the breeze. Following a network of established trails, we trek to some of the highest peaks and enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean. Elsewhere, we discover hamlets with medieval churches and pass terraced hillsides adorned with sun-kissed citrus trees. In contrast, our coastal walks reveal sleepy fishing marinas, secret coves and pebble bays.

Day 2 Walk to Deia, stopping for a dip at Cala Deia
We walk along the coast to the beautiful little bay of Cala Deiá, where (time permitting) we can paddle in the turquoise waters. From here, we head inland towards Deiá, one of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca owing to its idyllic setting in the hills. This walk explores the delightful area between the mountains and sea, using old tracks and paths over the cliffs, and offers coastal views along the Mediterranean pinewoods and coastal shrubs. Day 3 Tram ride to Sóller; take the Pilgrim Steps from Biniaraitx
We take the historic wooden tram to Sóller and walk towards the village of Biniaraitx. From here, we will walk a wonderful circular route through the middle section of the Biniaraix ravine, which will allow us to discover Mallorca’s popular Dry Stone Route. The route was named due to the special technique which was used to line the route using only stones laid on top of each other, which can be identified with the many terraces and cobbled paths. On the route we will stop to have a picnic surrounded by a 50 metre waterfall.Afterwards we will follow a different path back down to the centre of Sóller, where we usually stop for a drink or a wander around the town before taking the tram back to Puerto Sóller.Accommodation: Hotel Eden Nord (or similar)Walking distance: 6.5 mi (10.5km); ascent: 1,476ft (450m); descent: 1,476ft (450m); duration: five hours

Day 4 Free day
Today has been left free for you to use as you wish. Choose to relax in Puerto Sóller or explore elsewhere on the island. Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and there is a wealth of things to see and do – your leader will provide further details and help you to arrange any excursions locally. For instance, you may decide to spend the day in Sóller (inland from Puerto Sóller) – wandering through its narrow streets and visiting museums. Other options include visiting picturesque Valldemossa or the island capital, Palma, which is home to a magnificent cathedral, numerous churches, museums and excellent shopping opportunities. It is recommended to take the historic wooden train through the mountains between Sóller and Palma at least one way. For something a little different, it is possible to take a taxi boat to Sa Foradada (to eat at the restaurant) or take the ferry to La Calobra to visit the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis Gorge.Accommodation: Hotel Eden Nord (or similar)
Day 5 Leave Puerto Sóller along a coastal mule track to Cala Tuent; transfer to Lluc Monastery
After a short drive from the hotel, we start our walk from the Mirador de Ses Barques. From here, we follow an old mule track away from the coast to Coll de Moncaire and head inland through a hidden and unspoilt little valley to Balitx farm. Next, we climb up to Coll de Biniamar to join the coastal path of Sa Costera, offering spectacular scenery throughout, until we reach the little bay of Cala Tuent where the bus will meet us for the transfer (approximately one hour) along the beautiful Sa Calobra road to the Lluc Monastery.Accommodation: Lluc Monastery (or similar)Walking distance: 9mi (14km); ascent: 900ft (275m); descent: 2,130ft (650m); duration: five hours

Day 6 Circular walk around Muleta de Binifaldo, passing ancient oak forests
Today we enjoy a wonderful circular walk forming an arc around the Monastery of Lluc. Day 7 Ascent of Puig d'en Galileu
We finish the trip on a high, climbing Puig d'en Galileu, which is one of the highest peaks on the island at 3,875ft (1,181m). The accommodation on this walking trip in Mallorca is split across two properties:
Puerto Sóller: Hotel Eden Nord (nights 1-4)
Spend the first four nights at Eden Nord, a 112-room hotel just 655ft (200m) from a sandy beach. It has a seasonal outdoor pool, plus plenty of loungers and a solarium - a great spot to relax when you’re not out walking. It also has a bright and breezy restaurant serving food from Mallorca and beyond, plus a bar selling cocktails, beers and wines.
Lluc: Lluc Monastery (nights 5-7)
For the remaining three nights, we stay in an ancient monastery that’s considered the most holy site on the island. Pilgrims arrive from far and wide to visit a statue of the Virgin Mary, which, in the 13th century, miraculously reappeared in this spot after being taken to a local village church. We stay in the guesthouse-style accommodation, plus there’s a seasonal pool and botanic garden for downtime. The Sa Fonda restaurant, operational since 1921, serves Mallorcan cuisine made with local products.
Breakfast: Normally continental style including tea or coffee, fruit juice, bread, jam, honey, marmalade, and sometimes fresh fruit or cheese/ham.
Lunch: Comprises a typical Mallorcan-style Mediterranean packed lunch full of locally grown fresh produce. Lunches will be eaten as picnics during your walks, and will include foods such as bread, tomatoes, peppers, olives and olive oil, Mallorcan cheeses, sausages, fruits, chocolate and biscuits.
Vegetarians: It is possible to cater for vegetarians. A meat and seafood diet is the norm in Mallorca but salads and vegetables are included. Many vegetarians have been on this trip with no problems, but you must be prepared to be flexible and to take the food as you find it. If you are vegetarian or have special dietary requirements, please inform us on booking.

Getting to the start hotel
The start hotel is approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:
Take an Exodus transfer
Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times.
Make your own way
Private transfers are not available on this trip; however, if you are making your own way to Puerto Sóller from the airport, the easiest way is to take a taxi from the rank directly outside the airport. The journey should take 30 minutes and costs about €60-€70.
There are no direct buses or public transport routes from Palma Airport to Puerto Sóller, but there are various slower indirect options (these may take up to 1hr 30min in total). You can take a local bus from the airport to the main bus station in Palma (Plaza de España) for approximately €4, and from there choose between either another bus for approximately €5 or the more scenic route by train €18 and tram €8.

Local Sustainable Tourism Tax
In the Balearic Islands, there is a government-imposed Sustainable Tourism Tax for accommodation. This includes all hotels and monasteries. The local administration is in charge of the tax, which means this will need to be collected by the accommodation provider at check-in or check-out. This fee is currently set at €2.20 per person per night but this can fluctuate. For this trip, please allow approximately €15-€20 per person to cover these taxes which can be paid locally upon check-in by each group member.

On your free day, it is possible to arrange excursions locally. Below are some recommendations of things to do, together with approximate costs; however, actual prices may fluctuate. Some excursions may be seasonal or weather dependent and are subject to availability, while others may require a minimum number of participants. Your leader will provide further details locally.

The local bus network in Mallorca is also very good and inexpensive.
Avoiding the scorching summer months, we take advantage of the ideal walking temperatures in spring and autumn. Wildflowers bloom in spring and nature enthusiasts will be amazed by the amount of flora and fauna we encounter. We usually walk between four and seven hours per day, including stops and lunch breaks. You only need to carry your daypack with a good supply of water, your picnic lunch and a waterproof layer. The footpaths are generally well-marked stony (typical of a limestone landscape) paths with many traditional cobbled sections, but there are a few moderately steep ascents and descents and the occasional easy scramble and unmarked section. Our walks are at low altitude throughout.
On the ascent of Es Barranc de Biniaraix on Day 3, we follow an old pilgrims trail for much of the way, which involves quite a lot of stone steps. There is plenty of time to complete the walks and the pace is fairly gentle. A reasonable level of fitness will definitely aid your enjoyment of this trip.
Please note, weather in mountainous areas can be unpredictable throughout the year; occasionally your leader may be forced to amend the itinerary accordingly. On the days where we climb the mountains, it can be cold when the wind blows from the north, so we recommend carrying a warm layer with you.

Snowshoeing Hiking Tours
There’s nothing quite like hiking through a winter wonderland, no matter what level of challenge you’re after. On all our showshoeing trips we provide the snowshoes, hiking poles and, on the tougher treks, avalanche transceivers – the only specialist equipment you will need. Hiking through snow with the aid of snowshoes is an excellent way to travel through the winter landscape without needing the technical skills of a skier. Snowshoes work by distributing your weight over a larger area so that your feet don’t sink completely into the snow. Most modern snowshoes are made of light metal or plastic, with the heel left ‘free’ (as on cross-country skis) as this makes walking easier. Ski or walking poles help with both rhythm and balance. If you can walk, then you can snowshoe – it really is as simple as that!

Ideal for those new to walking trips. The pace will be easy, and the itinerary often includes some half-day walks to allow for visits or free time. Expect two to four hours of walking per day on easy paths, with some minor ascent or descent.

Therefore, you should be comfortable with three to five hours of walking per day and enjoy reasonably regular walks at home. The paths will be non-technical but could involve some short uneven sections. Maximum ascents will be no more than 2,295ft (700m), while longer days with less ascent could cover up to 8.5mi (14km).

Activity Level 3 (Moderate)
The inclusion of more hilly or even mountainous terrain makes this grade suitable for fit and frequent hikers. Underfoot conditions could be rocky or with some loose gravel; on wider trails, we may encounter some steep drops to one side. The maximum ascent could be up to 3,600ft (1,100m) in one day. We typically walk for four to seven hours per day.

Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging)
An adventure made for experienced hikers and hill walkers with good fitness, normally in mountainous terrain and sometimes at altitude with varied and occasionally challenging conditions underfoot. Walks on some days may meet the criteria for Activity Level 5 (Challenging). Expect five to seven hours of walking per day.

Ideal for experienced mountain hikers and trekkers with very good fitness. You could be walking longer distances (maximum 15.5mi/25km) for consecutive days. In the mountains, the maximum ascent would be 4,920ft (1,500m) in a day. You should feel comfortable walking six to eight hours per day, with sections of technical terrain (uneven ground with some loose rock, some narrow paths). Most itineraries include some days walking at altitude.

Every Exodus trip requires a sense of adventure! Choose your ideal Culture, Wildlife, Polar or Family trip by using our Activity Levels – a grading that indicates how strenuous an adventure will be.
Our trips in these programs are less active than our Walking, Cycling or Winter trips but we still apply an Activity Level to each adventure so you can judge the right trip for you. The Activity Level comprises two elements:
- Activities: The duration and difficulty of inclusions, such as on-foot sightseeing, guided walks or other adventurous activities.
- Overall pace: This refers to the length of each day, including early starts and longer journeys, as opposed to a more relaxed wake-up and some free time.
Activity Level 1 (Easy)
Any included activities will be easy and can be opted out of. An evenly paced trip with enough time to relax, alongside travel and sightseeing. Some days may include early starts but not usually on consecutive days.
Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate)
Any included activities will be easy or moderate and can be opted out of. Expect some busier days with early starts and long journeys, alongside a little free time.
Activity Level 3 (Moderate)
Some of the included activities may be moderately challenging but can be opted out of. Reasonable fitness is recommended to enjoy the trip to the fullest. A more full-on trip with early starts and longer days to make the most of our time away.
Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging)
Some of the activities may be more physically demanding, such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking or cycling, so good fitness levels are required. A very busy itinerary packed with activities. Expect regular early starts and long days.
A wide variety of Winter adventures are available with Exodus. Snowshoeing Activity Levels and cross-country ski grades are shown below. Activity Levels for these trips are based on the terrain, elevation gain (and loss), distance covered and fitness requirements.

Snowshoeing
Activity Level 1 (Easy)
Easy activities requiring some physical effort for a short length of time. Experience is not necessary; anyone who is fit and healthy enough to complete a weekend walk will be comfortable.
Activity Level 3 (Moderate)
Relatively full days, with four to five hours of snowshoeing, although there may be occasional longer, harder days. Experience is not necessary, but you should be confident in your fitness level.
Activity Level 5 (Challenging)
Generally, four to six hours a day, with longer ascents and a faster pace to complete circular routes. There may be more challenging sections throughout the trip. Experience of mountain snowshoeing and a good fitness level are required.
Cross-Country Skiing Grades
Exodus offers cross-country skiing holidays to suit a wide range of technical and physical abilities. Technique is paramount when cross-country skiing – as such we provide tuition on these trips and use Grades rather than Activity Levels. The aim is to create groups of similar abilities and fitness.
To help you find the right adventure for you, we’ve included an equivalent Activity Level for each Grade. But if you’d like to know more, or have any questions, feel free to call and speak to an expert.
Grade 1 Beginners
Equivalent Activity Level: 1 (Easy)
For complete beginners. We start with the basics, including how to stop using the snowplough technique and how to turn. You will be on skis for at least five to six hours a day, with a focus on tuition, getting comfortable on skis and building towards longer tours through the winter landscape. In some centres, there may also be some easy off-track skiing. This involves heading off the pre-cut tracks, typically across frozen lakes or snow-covered pastures.
Activity Level 2 Improvers
Equivalent Activity Level: 2 (Easy & Moderate)
Ideal if you’ve enjoyed at least one Grade 1 trip and grasped the basics. Tuition is offered to refresh and improve technique and typically involves skiing a little further than in Grade 1 weeks, and over more varied terrain (ie more ups and downs), which requires slightly higher fitness levels. In some cases, these are acceptable for newcomers to cross-country skiing. Beginners on these weeks should be very fit and proficient in sports that develop balance (ice skating, roller skating or roller skiing) as you will need to pick up the basic technique quickly. Please contact us if you wish to book a Grade 2 holiday but have not skied before.
Grade 3 Intermediates
Equivalent Activity Level: 3 (Moderate)
Ideal if you’re looking to push on, tackle slightly steeper terrain and cover more ground each day. Typical groups will have a few weeks’ skiing behind them, be comfortable with the basics and happy on longer day tours. There will still be tuition on these trips.
Grade 4 Advanced
Equivalent Activity Level: 4 (Moderate &Challenging)
Choose this grade if you can tackle ‘ups and downs’ competently, can manage a controlled snowplough descent and want to ski at a lively pace. You should also be able to get up swiftly and easily by yourself after a fall. The mix of track and off-track skiing varies. Be prepared for long, steep ascents and descents, and for off-track skiing over variable snow. You need good fitness, stamina, and sound, controlled technique. Climbing skins will be needed on some days.
Grade 5 Challenging
Equivalent Activity Level: 5 (Challenging)
For experienced, proficient skiers looking for long, steep ascents and descents, including off-track skiing over variable snow. Good fitness, stamina, and sound, controlled technique is required.
The accommodation on this walking trip in Mallorca is split across two properties:
Puerto Sóller: Hotel Eden Nord (nights 1-4)
Spend the first four nights at Eden Nord, a 112-room hotel just 655ft (200m) from a sandy beach. It has a seasonal outdoor pool, plus plenty of loungers and a solarium - a great spot to relax when you’re not out walking. It also has a bright and breezy restaurant serving food from Mallorca and beyond, plus a bar selling cocktails, beers and wines.
Lluc: Lluc Monastery (nights 5-7)
For the remaining three nights, we stay in an ancient monastery that’s considered the most holy site on the island. Pilgrims arrive from far and wide to visit a statue of the Virgin Mary, which, in the 13th century, miraculously reappeared in this spot after being taken to a local village church. We stay in the guesthouse-style accommodation, plus there’s a seasonal pool and botanic garden for downtime. The Sa Fonda restaurant, operational since 1921, serves Mallorcan cuisine made with local products.
Breakfast: Normally continental style including tea or coffee, fruit juice, bread, jam, honey, marmalade, and sometimes fresh fruit or cheese/ham.
Lunch: Comprises a typical Mallorcan-style Mediterranean packed lunch full of locally grown fresh produce. Lunches will be eaten as picnics during your walks, and will include foods such as bread, tomatoes, peppers, olives and olive oil, Mallorcan cheeses, sausages, fruits, chocolate and biscuits.
Vegetarians: It is possible to cater for vegetarians. A meat and seafood diet is the norm in Mallorca but salads and vegetables are included. Many vegetarians have been on this trip with no problems, but you must be prepared to be flexible and to take the food as you find it. If you are vegetarian or have special dietary requirements, please inform us on booking.

Getting to the start hotel
The start hotel is approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:
Take an Exodus transfer
Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times.
Make your own way
Private transfers are not available on this trip; however, if you are making your own way to Puerto Sóller from the airport, the easiest way is to take a taxi from the rank directly outside the airport. The journey should take 30 minutes and costs about €60-€70.
There are no direct buses or public transport routes from Palma Airport to Puerto Sóller, but there are various slower indirect options (these may take up to 1hr 30min in total). You can take a local bus from the airport to the main bus station in Palma (Plaza de España) for approximately €4, and from there choose between either another bus for approximately €5 or the more scenic route by train €18 and tram €8.

Local Sustainable Tourism Tax
In the Balearic Islands, there is a government-imposed Sustainable Tourism Tax for accommodation. This includes all hotels and monasteries. The local administration is in charge of the tax, which means this will need to be collected by the accommodation provider at check-in or check-out. This fee is currently set at €2.20 per person per night but this can fluctuate. For this trip, please allow approximately €15-€20 per person to cover these taxes which can be paid locally upon check-in by each group member.

On your free day, it is possible to arrange excursions locally. Below are some recommendations of things to do, together with approximate costs; however, actual prices may fluctuate. Some excursions may be seasonal or weather dependent and are subject to availability, while others may require a minimum number of participants. Your leader will provide further details locally.
— Go to Palma to visit attractions such as the cathedral, the Royal Palace of Almudaina, Bellver Castle, Es Baluart Museum of Contemporary Art, the old quarter, the promenade or for shopping:

— By tram and train: Tram €7 per person one way, train €22 per person return. Total: €36 per person round trip (you can pay directly on the tram and for the train you have to purchase the ticket at Sóller train station)

Palma Cathedral: Approximately €8 per person with audio guide. Approximately €25 per person guided tour (set times).

The local bus network in Mallorca is also very good and inexpensive.
Avoiding the scorching summer months, we take advantage of the ideal walking temperatures in spring and autumn. Wildflowers bloom in spring and nature enthusiasts will be amazed by the amount of flora and fauna we encounter. We usually walk between four and seven hours per day, including stops and lunch breaks. You only need to carry your daypack with a good supply of water, your picnic lunch and a waterproof layer. The footpaths are generally well-marked stony (typical of a limestone landscape) paths with many traditional cobbled sections, but there are a few moderately steep ascents and descents and the occasional easy scramble and unmarked section. Our walks are at low altitude throughout.
On the ascent of Es Barranc de Biniaraix on Day 3, we follow an old pilgrims trail for much of the way, which involves quite a lot of stone steps. There is plenty of time to complete the walks and the pace is fairly gentle. A reasonable level of fitness will definitely aid your enjoyment of this trip.
Please note, weather in mountainous areas can be unpredictable throughout the year; occasionally your leader may be forced to amend the itinerary accordingly. On the days where we climb the mountains, it can be cold when the wind blows from the north, so we recommend carrying a warm layer with you.

Snowshoeing Hiking Tours
There’s nothing quite like hiking through a winter wonderland, no matter what level of challenge you’re after. It’s far less technical than skiing, and with our expert guides on hand to help, you can master snowshoeing in minutes. Using our own two feet, the opportunity for winter exploration is endless.
On all our showshoeing trips we provide the snowshoes, hiking poles and, on the tougher treks, avalanche transceivers – the only specialist equipment you will need. Hiking through snow with the aid of snowshoes is an excellent way to travel through the winter landscape without needing the technical skills of a skier. Snowshoes work by distributing your weight over a larger area so that your feet don’t sink completely into the snow. Most modern snowshoes are made of light metal or plastic, with the heel left ‘free’ (as on cross-country skis) as this makes walking easier. Ski or walking poles help with both rhythm and balance. If you can walk, then you can snowshoe – it really is as simple as that!

Activity Level 1 (Easy)
Ideal for those new to walking trips. The pace will be easy, and the itinerary often includes some half-day walks to allow for visits or free time. Expect two to four hours of walking per day on easy paths, with some minor ascent or descent.

Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate)
Expect generally easy trails, but with some ascent and descent on most days. Some walks may meet the criteria for Activity Level 3 (Moderate). Therefore, you should be comfortable with three to five hours of walking per day and enjoy reasonably regular walks at home. The paths will be non-technical but could involve some short uneven sections. Maximum ascents will be no more than 2,295ft (700m), while longer days with less ascent could cover up to 8.5mi (14km).

Activity Level 3 (Moderate)
The inclusion of more hilly or even mountainous terrain makes this grade suitable for fit and frequent hikers. Underfoot conditions could be rocky or with some loose gravel; on wider trails, we may encounter some steep drops to one side. The maximum ascent could be up to 3,600ft (1,100m) in one day. We typically walk for four to seven hours per day.

Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging)
An adventure made for experienced hikers and hill walkers with good fitness, normally in mountainous terrain and sometimes at altitude with varied and occasionally challenging conditions underfoot. Walks on some days may meet the criteria for Activity Level 5 (Challenging). Expect five to seven hours of walking per day.

Activity Level 5 (Challenging)
Ideal for experienced mountain hikers and trekkers with very good fitness. You could be walking longer distances (maximum 15.5mi/25km) for consecutive days. In the mountains, the maximum ascent would be 4,920ft (1,500m) in a day. You should feel comfortable walking six to eight hours per day, with sections of technical terrain (uneven ground with some loose rock, some narrow paths). Most itineraries include some days walking at altitude.

Our toughest Walking & Trekking trips normally involve the ascent of a summit, usually above the snowline and at high altitude. Expect technical terrain on most days, often using crampons and ice axes. Average daily hikes are between eight and 10 hours. Previous experience and excellent fitness and mobility are essential.

Activity Level 3 (Moderate)
We recommend you are a confident cyclist with good fitness and some experience of longer rides. You’ll be on the saddle for five to seven hours a day and should expect to tackle some bigger climbs or longer distances.

Ideal for experienced cyclists with very good fitness. You should feel comfortable cycling six to eight hours per day, including longer distances or tougher climbs, possibly over tricker terrain.

Every Exodus trip requires a sense of adventure! Choose your ideal Culture, Wildlife, Polar or Family trip by using our Activity Levels – a grading that indicates how strenuous an adventure will be.
Our trips in these programs are less active than our Walking, Cycling or Winter trips but we still apply an Activity Level to each adventure so you can judge the right trip for you. The Activity Level comprises two elements:
- Activities: The duration and difficulty of inclusions, such as on-foot sightseeing, guided walks or other adventurous activities.
- Overall pace: This refers to the length of each day, including early starts and longer journeys, as opposed to a more relaxed wake-up and some free time.
Activity Level 1 (Easy)
Any included activities will be easy and can be opted out of. An evenly paced trip with enough time to relax, alongside travel and sightseeing. Some days may include early starts but not usually on consecutive days.
Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate)
Any included activities will be easy or moderate and can be opted out of. Expect some busier days with early starts and long journeys, alongside a little free time.
Activity Level 3 (Moderate)
Some of the included activities may be moderately challenging but can be opted out of. Reasonable fitness is recommended to enjoy the trip to the fullest. A more full-on trip with early starts and longer days to make the most of our time away.
Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging)
Some of the activities may be more physically demanding, such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking or cycling, so good fitness levels are required. A very busy itinerary packed with activities. Expect regular early starts and long days.
A wide variety of Winter adventures are available with Exodus. Snowshoeing Activity Levels and cross-country ski grades are shown below. Activity Levels for these trips are based on the terrain, elevation gain (and loss), distance covered and fitness requirements.

Snowshoeing
Activity Level 1 (Easy)
Easy activities requiring some physical effort for a short length of time. Experience is not necessary; anyone who is fit and healthy enough to complete a weekend walk will be comfortable.
Activity Level 3 (Moderate)
Relatively full days, with four to five hours of snowshoeing, although there may be occasional longer, harder days. Experience is not necessary, but you should be confident in your fitness level.
Activity Level 5 (Challenging)
Generally, four to six hours a day, with longer ascents and a faster pace to complete circular routes. There may be more challenging sections throughout the trip. Experience of mountain snowshoeing and a good fitness level are required.
Cross-Country Skiing Grades
Exodus offers cross-country skiing holidays to suit a wide range of technical and physical abilities. Technique is paramount when cross-country skiing – as such we provide tuition on these trips and use Grades rather than Activity Levels. The aim is to create groups of similar abilities and fitness.
To help you find the right adventure for you, we’ve included an equivalent Activity Level for each Grade. But if you’d like to know more, or have any questions, feel free to call and speak to an expert.
Grade 1 Beginners
Equivalent Activity Level: 1 (Easy)
For complete beginners. We start with the basics, including how to stop using the snowplough technique and how to turn. You will be on skis for at least five to six hours a day, with a focus on tuition, getting comfortable on skis and building towards longer tours through the winter landscape. In some centres, there may also be some easy off-track skiing. This involves heading off the pre-cut tracks, typically across frozen lakes or snow-covered pastures.
Activity Level 2 Improvers
Equivalent Activity Level: 2 (Easy & Moderate)
Ideal if you’ve enjoyed at least one Grade 1 trip and grasped the basics. Tuition is offered to refresh and improve technique and typically involves skiing a little further than in Grade 1 weeks, and over more varied terrain (ie more ups and downs), which requires slightly higher fitness levels. In some cases, these are acceptable for newcomers to cross-country skiing. Beginners on these weeks should be very fit and proficient in sports that develop balance (ice skating, roller skating or roller skiing) as you will need to pick up the basic technique quickly. Please contact us if you wish to book a Grade 2 holiday but have not skied before.
Grade 3 Intermediates
Equivalent Activity Level: 3 (Moderate)
Ideal if you’re looking to push on, tackle slightly steeper terrain and cover more ground each day. Typical groups will have a few weeks’ skiing behind them, be comfortable with the basics and happy on longer day tours. There will still be tuition on these trips.
Grade 4 Advanced
Equivalent Activity Level: 4 (Moderate &Challenging)
Choose this grade if you can tackle ‘ups and downs’ competently, can manage a controlled snowplough descent and want to ski at a lively pace. You should also be able to get up swiftly and easily by yourself after a fall. The mix of track and off-track skiing varies. Be prepared for long, steep ascents and descents, and for off-track skiing over variable snow. You need good fitness, stamina, and sound, controlled technique. Climbing skins will be needed on some days.
Grade 5 Challenging
Equivalent Activity Level: 5 (Challenging)
For experienced, proficient skiers looking for long, steep ascents and descents, including off-track skiing over variable snow. Good fitness, stamina, and sound, controlled technique is required.

Exodus started life on 4 February 1974 when two friends got together to provide an overland truck to travel to the Minaret of Jam, deep in the heart of the Hindu Kush, the most inaccessible of the world’s great monuments.
